There is a TON to building a great business website. I actually don't like even using the term "website" because I think it gives people the impression of just an "online advertisement" or a "web presence". Yes, there is value in having something that basic. It's definitely better than nothing or just a Facebook page for your business. But if your goals are to:
A. Establish real credibility
B. Provide quality information
C. Generate Income and
D. Have full ownership and control,
that requires a lot more expertise and work to make it great. I think almost no one, unless they DO web development and internet marketing themselves, has even a small idea of what goes into even a decent basic site, let alone a fully developed lead generation/content business site.
It starts with your concept and validation of it;s viability through real world data analysis and some serious thought.. Then moves into keyword research and analysis (this is key to success). Then comes the design and structure, planning of the content, images, color selections, page layouts, SEO and analytics, etc. and finally publishing the site.
And of course, it is never REALLY finished. Just like a child is not finished at birth. It needs to be nurtured, adjusted, fed, edited. managed, etc. It's almost like a living thing. For all of these reasons, I stay with my clients forever. I'm part of the deal.
